Brains and Pleasure. Hmmm…

We’re now listening regularly to two fabulous podcasts, NPR’s “Science Friday” with Ira Flatow and Chicago Public Radio’s “This American Life” with Ira Glass. Of special interest to us was Science Friday’s talk 8-3-2007 with Tor Wager, Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology of Columbia University in New York.

Wager’s team has done P.E.T. scans of people’s brains in placebo studies  —  showing how we respond to suggestions about whether something is fiction or reality.  If you consider what Wager and Flatow say in this interview, you might be as surprised as we were.  Placebos can cause the release of naturally-occuring opiates in your brain.  Wow, Dude. That gives new meaning to “it’s all in your head,” no?  See and listen to what we heard.
